Chapter 17

After Aviva was born, I didn’t have a summer internship because the plan was for me to take care of the baby those months and return for my third year. But then Aviva came early, I missed my finals, and the administration didn’t know how to handle it. They’d never had this problem before. They said they’d convene and get back to me with a decision shortly.

For six weeks, I waited by the phone. It sat on Joe’s desk beside stacks of papers, textbooks, his offer of employment pending bar results, and a copy of our wedding photo. His bar exam materials sat here, too, beside a pair of scissors and stacks of handwritten notes. I read over a question and knew the answer. Then I read over another and another and another, and knew them all. I sat down and completed one hundred multiple choice answers. But still no call. I left personal messages for Macklowe, and general ones with his office, asking for a makeup test date. Macklowe sent flowers and a stuffed animal—a little dog we named Remi—but said nothing about school in the note, and he never responded to my calls.

As I nursed Aviva and studied, my hair was in my way, so I tried to pull it back, but it was dirty and unwashed and fell limp on the sides of my shoulders. In the previous months, it had been ripped, singed, knotted, and bitten. I didn’t have the time to clean it, let alone brush it, so I picked up the scissors and began to cut.

Then, the phone rang.
